What Fishing Truly Means

by: Abel Yeo

For many anglers fishing simply means trying to catch the next big fish time after time. Many seek high catch rates and wonder alone to costly pay pond as an alternative to ensure something is brought back to the dinner plate with the time the have invested. Expensive and professional equipment is what comes to mind as the most sensible things to get to ensure better catch rates and to ensure that everything is well organised and well prepared for every trip out.

but in time you'll realise at the end of pursuing the biggest catch, there's nothing else to achieve. when you're able to bring back multiple fishes but no one else to share that joy with except your family who may not understand. At the end of every purchase you find that you've spent more than you gain. lastly, trips get increasingly mundane as each fish is landed with ease.

Invest in friends:
fishing is always about the company and not always about the fish  thought it is true that it is called "fishing" not "friending" nevertheless at the end of the day the satisfaction lies in the friendships that you've forged and strengthen and that to me is the best catch of the day.
Fishing with company allows a higher catch rate in a particular place and with that you're to share the joy with every fish brought up. Landing a big fish is a bonus and sharing it is an even greater boost.

Invest in patience:
although fishing is a waiting game that takes several hours, it also gives you patience in the little things. trying out pay ponds frequently with high catch rates may be tempting but soon after you'll spend more money than time with friends whom you fish with.

Invest in time not fish:
pay ponds are tempting and sometimes therapeutic when catch rate is low in overcrowded fishing spots. however if you were to consider how much money you could truly save that can be spread out to several days of fishing in common fishing spots around Singapore. even taking a cab around for an ease in transport congestion can save you more money if you spend wisely. and who knows? you might be fortunate enough to land a big fish on that day making up for the money you have spent on bait and transport.

Don't doubt fishing spots:
there's a reason why many anglers flock to certain fishing spots. If there wasn't anything worth catching, no one will even make the effort to fish there in the first place. fishes there aren't farm bred so there's no standard sizes and weight and most of the time they tend to out grow their expected size. fishes in the ocean aren't always following regular migratory patterns or feeding patterns and tend to adapt and move to several new places to feed and spawn if it means surviving. this means that fishes caught in the wild are often random giving the element of surprise many a times.
weather affects the fishes activity so dont be disheartened if you catch nothing on a rainy or scotching hot day.

Ghetto style(using only what you have; as cheap as possible) equipment is the best:
hooking the fish is half the fun.the other half is how you handle the fish with what little that you have. this allows you to be familiar with handling all types of fishes with ease. Lip grips are often used but should be an investment only when you've familiarized yourself with most types of fishes and how to handle situations.
all you require when starting out is pliers and perhaps a pair of gloves.
using budget equipment also gives you the challenge of landing a fish before the fish lands you( in the water).
a good fight and a sense of maneuvering a big fish to ensure that your line doesnt snag or break loose also teaches you good fishing fighting habits and even if the fish gets away, its a good lesson to learn (unless you loose kims than thats unforgivable).
being unprepared for situations gives you the best experience money cant buy.

stay tuned for more posts by us!cheers and loose drags(tight lines too lame).
